Supplies for installing Christmas lights on a roofline

Christmas Light Installation Supplies carries the materials used at each stage of a C9 roofline install: socket wire and LED C9 bulbs to build the run, clips and tabs to mount it, slide-on plugs and lamp cord to finish and power it, and photocell timers to switch it. Shipping is free on all orders with free shipping on $500+ and no fees, and every order ships the same day.

Build the run

C9 socket wire is zip cord (SPT-1 or SPT-2, as listed on each spool) with E17 sockets molded at a fixed spacing. It comes on 1,000 ft. spools for cutting custom lengths, or inside a C9 installation kit sized to 250, 500, 1,000, 2,000 or 4,000 ft. LED C9 bulbs thread into each socket and come in 25-packs and 500-bulb cases. Replacement sockets repair a cracked or damaged socket without cutting out the run.

Mount the run

The clip is chosen by the surface it attaches to:

  • O-clips: snap around the socket base and hook over a gutter lip or under a shingle edge.
  • All-in-one clips: a single clip that fits both gutters and shingles.
  • Shingle tabs: slide under the shingle for a low line along the roof edge.
  • Tile and extended fascia clips: for tile roofs and deep fascia boards.
  • Ridge clips: straddle the ridge cap along peaks.
  • Magnet clips: hold to steel trim, canopies and metal roofing.
  • 8 in. light stakes: set C9 bulbs along walkways and beds.

Plan one clip per socket and carry spares for corners, breakage and old gutters that need two.

Finish and power the run

Slide-on male and female plugs clamp onto cut wire with no stripping. The male plug goes on the end facing power and the female on the far end so the next run can connect. Lamp cord carries power from the outlet to the first socket or across a gap like a garage door. A photocell timer at the outlet turns the display on at dusk and off after the set hours.

Trees and landscaping

LED mini light strands carry 50 lights at 4 in. or 6 in. spacing and connect end to end. They're sold singly and in 24-strand cases for wrapping trunks, canopies and shrubs.

Choosing one spacing for the job

Socket wire spacing sets how the line reads from the street. 12 in. spacing gives a solid line and suits single-story homes and entrances. 15 in. spacing uses about 20% fewer bulbs and clips for the same footage and is common on two-story and commercial rooflines. Pick one spacing for the whole building so every edge matches, and order clips and bulbs to the socket count rather than the footage.

Planning power

Before cutting, note which outdoor outlets share a breaker and keep each circuit's load within its rating. Every outdoor outlet used should be GFCI-protected. One photocell timer per outlet keeps the whole display on one schedule.

Installation sequence on a two-story roofline

A two-story house usually has a lower eave line, an upper eave line, two or more gable rakes running up to a peak, and often a porch roof or garage in front. The order you light those edges in decides how many times the ladder moves, where the power has to reach, and whether the runs connect cleanly. This is the sequence that keeps a two-story install organized.

1. Measure and map on the ground

Measure every edge separately: lower eaves, upper eaves, each rake from eave to peak, and the porch or garage. Sketch the house from the street and mark where each run starts and which outdoor outlet powers it. Total the edges and choose a kit at or just above the measured footage. Many two-story rooflines fall in the 500 ft. kit size (500 ft. at 15 in. spacing, $823.12); larger homes with outbuildings move to 1,000 ft..

2. Cut, plug and test every run on the ground

Lay each run out below its edge, cut the socket wire between sockets at the measured length, and fit a male plug on the power end and a female plug on the far end. Fill the sockets and plug the run in. Every run should light fully before anyone climbs. A dead socket found now is a two-minute fix; found at the peak, it's a ladder move.

3. Lower eave line first

Start with the run nearest the outlet so its male plug reaches power without an extension. Work along the gutter clipping every socket: O-clips over the gutter lip or all-in-one clips on mixed gutter and shingle edges. Keep the bulbs pointing straight up and the clip spacing even; this is the line seen closest from the street.

4. Porch roof and garage

Do the low secondary roofs next while the ladder is still at first-story height. These runs often feed from the lower eave run through a female plug, or from their own outlet if the circuit load calls for it.

5. Upper eave line

Move the ladder up to second-story height and clip the upper eave the same way. Plan the start point so the run can drop its male plug down a corner to an outlet, or connect to a lamp cord lead run down the downspout side of the house.

6. Rakes, bottom to peak

Clip each gable rake starting at the eave and working up toward the peak, so the run hangs from clips already set below you rather than pulling on loose wire. On shingle rakes, shingle tabs or all-in-one clips keep the line tight to the edge. Where two rakes meet, end one run with a female plug at the peak and start the other from the same point, or cut the run so a single length turns the peak.

7. Ridges and peaks

If the ridgeline is lit, ridge clips straddle the ridge cap. Set these last, from a properly secured position, since they're the highest and least forgiving part of the job.

8. Connect, power and set the timer

Connect runs to their outlets with the male plugs or lamp cord leads, keeping the total load on each circuit within its rating and every outdoor outlet GFCI-protected. Program the photocell timer on-hours and face the sensor toward open sky, away from porch lights.

Ladder and safety notes

  • Set extension ladders at roughly a 4-to-1 angle (one foot out for every four feet up) and extend them 3 ft. past the roof edge.
  • Use a standoff stabilizer at the second story so the ladder doesn't rest on the gutter you're clipping to.
  • Work in pairs on two-story edges: one person on the ladder, one feeding wire and moving the ladder base.
  • Don't install on wet or frosted roofs, and keep ladders and runs clear of service drops.

Supplies for a two-story job

  • Socket wire or a kit sized to the total footage, at one spacing for the whole house.
  • One clip per socket, plus about 5% spare; all-in-one clips are $17.99 per 100-pack.
  • One male and one female plug per run; $49.99 per 50-pack of male plugs.
  • Lamp cord for leads from outlets to upper runs.
  • A photocell timer for each outlet used.

Questions

What's the difference between an O-clip and an all-in-one clip?

An O-clip wraps the socket base and hooks over a gutter lip or under a shingle. An all-in-one clip holds the socket and fits both gutters and shingles with one part, which keeps a mixed roofline on one clip type.

How do slide-on plugs attach?

Push the cut end of the socket wire into the plug body and close it. The prongs pierce the insulation and make contact, so no stripping is needed. Male plugs face the power source and female plugs go on the far end.

What do I use where a run crosses a garage door or walkway?

Lamp cord bridges the gap. Finish the run with a female plug, run lamp cord across, and start the next run with a male plug on the cord.

How many clips should I bring for a job?

One per socket, plus about 5% for corners, breakage and gutters that need a second clip.

Can I repair a damaged socket instead of replacing the run?

Yes. Replacement sockets are sold in 10-packs and clamp onto the socket wire in place of a cracked or damaged one.

When will my order ship?

Every order ships the same day it's placed, whatever time you order. There's no cutoff.

What's the difference between C9 and C7 bulbs?

C9 bulbs are the larger of the two, about 1⅛ in. across on an E17 intermediate base, and are the standard for rooflines and commercial displays viewed from the street. C7 bulbs are smaller, on an E12 candelabra base, and suit close-viewed spaces like porches, railings and walkways.

How many bulbs do I need for a roofline?

Convert the run length to inches and divide by the socket spacing. A 100 ft. roofline is 1,200 in.; at 12 in. spacing that's 100 sockets and 100 bulbs, and at 15 in. spacing it's 80.

Should I choose 12 in. or 15 in. spacing?

12 in. spacing gives a tighter, brighter line and is common on single-story homes and anything viewed up close. 15 in. spacing uses about 20% fewer bulbs for the same footage and is common on larger homes and commercial rooflines viewed from a distance.

Which clip do I need?

All-in-one clips fit shingles and gutters. Ridge clips mount along roof peaks. Tile and extended fascia clips are for tile roofs and deep fascia boards. Magnet clips hold to metal surfaces, and light stakes place C9 or C7 bulbs along walkways and beds.

Can I return items I don't use?

Yes. Unused, uninstalled product in its original, intact packaging can be returned within 30 days of delivery. Request the return before shipping anything back.
